The Sidney Prize honors exceptional journalism that highlights social and economic injustice. Each winner receives a $500 honorarium designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel and will be announced on the second Wednesday of each month by Hillman Foundation – long aware of its responsibility as an advocate of free press – since 1950 when this program began, which has honored contributors to daily, periodical, labor press publications; photojournalism; television news; opinion/analysis media outlets among others. Nominations can be submitted from members of the public – nomination deadlines being accepted from any member of the public with nomination deadlines being accepted from any member of public. Early on, the Foundation granted out thousands of dollars through scholarships and research grants. Now, its grants cover a broader array of grantees with special attention paid to those most in need – from those looking for lasting peace through to those searching for improved housing, medical care and employment security; fighting discrimination on race, nationality religion and gender grounds and seeking solutions for poverty and hunger around the globe.
Of particular note are college and university students nationwide. Recently, the Foundation has increased its support of undergraduates. Our society relies on young people being prepared to face today’s ever-evolving global marketplace; therefore, young people must be supported as they make their mark in our world today.
The Foundation is also committed to undergraduate scholarship, evidenced by its Iwanter Prize endowment from Sidney Iwanter ’51 (LLB, BS). Each year one graduating senior who has demonstrated significant humanities-based scholarship of general academic distinction through a senior thesis will receive this unrestricted $2,000 award.

This year, Overland is pleased to present first place for the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize to Dawn for “Who Rattles the Night?” published in Overland 2023; two runners-up were also chosen and their stories will appear online; additionally, Dawn will receive a complimentary subscription to Overland magazine!

No religious affiliation exists within its organizational framework – and thus far the Sidney Hillman Foundation is registered 501(c)(3) organization.
