The MGM Discoveries Art Prize and the HK Prize

Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 marks a first for MGM Discoveries Art Prize with this inaugural MGM Discoveries Art Prize being awarded. South Korean artist Shin Min’s work entitled Ew! There’s Hair in the Food! demonstrates some of the challenges women working in high-pressure service and corporate sectors face and is currently featured at MGM Discoveries section until 30 March.

Sergio Garcia earned nearly $4 Million after taking home nearly $2 Million after winning this week’s ATP Hong Kong Open – the second event on the ATP 250 calendar. Garcia triumphed at Fanling Golf Club after an outstanding final round, while Dean Burmester and Jon Rahm shared team honors with an overall score of -37. Interestingly enough, Hong Kong Open offers more singles prizes (80% of total purse awarded to singles compared to 20% awarded for doubles) compared to any other tournament on its schedule.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) scientists were honored with the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics – often known as the “Oscars of Science”. HKUST researchers participated in ATLAS Collaboration at Large Hadron Collider which discovered Higgs Boson particle as well as searching for new physics beyond standard model of particle physics.

China Daily Hong Kong earned an unprecedented haul at this year’s Hong Kong News Awards, collecting 17 wins across nine categories – its best ever haul. China Daily’s investigative journalism earned particular acclaim – winning first place for Most Outstanding Feature Reporting after reporting on controversial Dubai prince’s plans to establish US$500 Million family office in Hong Kong, and taking first place for Best Social Media News reporting due to coverage of self-immolation protests in Hong Kong.

The Asia Society Hong Kong Foundation Prize, established annually to honour individuals, groups or institutions who have significantly advanced knowledge on Hong Kong since 1997 has been renamed in honour of Dr Michael Chan as its inaugural Chairman and founding member. Established to recognise Hong Kong scholars, civil servants, businesspeople and community leaders.

The winner of the Hong Kong Prize will be announced in May and will receive both a trophy and certificate, along with publication of their submission in Asia Society Hong Kong Studies journal.
